WHAT ARE DAIKON RADISHES?

BETTER THAN BROCCOLI

We all know the more common red radishes – crunchy little veggies that pack a flavour punch. There are many different types, different shapes, colours and sizes: small red ones, round purple ones, longer red and white ones, horseradish, breakfast radish and our much-loved daikon radish. Did you know they come from the same family as broccoli? Packed with goodness, we think daikon radishes are better.

VERSATILE VEGGIE

Daikon radishes are the much bigger cousins of the more well-known red radishes with a milder, slightly sweeter flavour. Also known as the Japanese or winter radish, it is included in many Japanese dishes. Radishes are often eaten raw, but daikon radishes are also pickled or even cooked. Shredded and added to slaws, they add freshness to richer fried dishes, or added to stir fries they can bulk up the dish. Although raw radish is very crunchy, when cooked it becomes more like a potato.

POWER NUTRIENTS

Radishes are part of the cruciferous veggie family, like broccoli, and are known for their nutritional value. Daikon radishes are quite high in vitamin C and potassium and contains fibre and other nutrients. But what we are after is sulforaphene, a bioactive compound which is released when eaten.

Sulforaphene, similar to sulforaphane found in broccoli, has ability to activate the body’s self-defence mechanisms, reducing inflammation and toxic accumulation in our cells. The health benefits of this process are felt throughout the body, supporting joint, heart, brain, gut health, and a strong immune system. There is also increasing evidence of its link to anti-cancer properties.

SEEDS: THE POWER OF PLANTS

Although microgreens are a very popular source of nutrition, through research we discovered that the power of plants are in their seeds. This is because they contain an even more concentrated source of all the nutrients, all in a tiny package, ready to support the growth of a new plant. This includes sulforaphene.

Luckily, you can eat the entire daikon radish plant, from the root to the big leafy greens, and the seeds – which, or course, is our favourite part!
